The 4 Cs of a diamond: Carat

10 November 2020

The best known parameter in the 4 Cs classification is certainly the carat, which is the unit of
measurement used to describe the weight of a diamond.
Where does the word originate?

The word Carat is derived from the Greek “keràtion”, meaning “fruit of the carob tree” because
each carob seed had a uniform weight and hence was used to determine the weight of the
diamond.

This weight, which today is expressed in carats, is then divided into points:
One carat is equal to 100 points, or 0.20 grams.

Generally diamonds with a high carat weight are more valuable, however this parameter alone is
not sufficient to determine its value. The carat is just one of the many factors to consider when
assessing a diamond.

In fact, two stones with the same carats can present a considerable difference in price if we also
consider the other diamond classification parameters such as clarity, colour and cut.
The diamonds selected by our Atelier are selected according to all these characteristics in order
to assess their beauty, and not only according to their carat or cut.
