The history of the platinum diamond solitaire ring

29 October 2017

The custom of giving a platinum diamond solitaire ring as a promise of eternal love has ancient origins. It is believed that this practice was invented by the ancient Egyptians.  However, the history of this custom can only be reliably traced as far back as ancient Rome. Pliny the Elder explains in his writings how it was common practice to give two rings to the bride, one in iron to wear in the home and one in gold to wear in public. The tradition of placing the ring on the ring finger of the right hand also came from the Romans. At that time, it was believed that this finger contained a vein that led to the heart.

The tradition of the solitaire ring dates back to 1477, when Maximilian of Austria gave his future bride a gold ring with a single large diamond. Later, with the discovery of platinum in the early 1700s, this material was used as a material for rings. Platinum adorned the most precious and symbolic rings, such as those used in marriage proposals.

The widespread use of diamonds in engagement rings, instead, began in the Victorian era, towards the end of the 1800s, with the discovery of the diamond deposits in Africa.

The tradition of presenting a platinum diamond solitaire ring by a partner to their prospective spouse continues today. In its Atelier in Piazza San Marco, Salvadori welcomes men of all ages and guides and advises them during this special moment of choosing the engagement ring.

Salvadori offers a wide range of rings able to meet any need and taste. For example, the Anonimo Veneziano is a classic solitaire with a thin stem and a pure essence diamond. For dreamers, instead, Salvadori offers Star, another platinum solitaire ring with diamonds and claw mounts that form a star, like the brightest stars in the sky. For romantics, Cupido has an asymmetric stem that opens like a flower to hold a brilliant-cut diamond of 1 to 2 carats.

These are just some of the platinum diamond solitaire rings offered by Salvadori. Come and discover all the engagement rings.
