Carat, Colour, Clarity, Cut: the 4 Cs for evaluating the quality of a diamond

31 July 2018

Each diamond is unique and very different from each other, which is why it was necessary to find an international grading system to give the right value to each precious stone.

This system was developed by the GIA, the Gemmological Institute of America in the mid-1930s and updated according to market changes, thus giving rise to the so-called 4Cs grading system: carat, colour, clarity, cut.

Carat – Weight

The weight of a diamond is expressed in carats. One “carat” equals 200 milligrams or 1/5 of a gram. This unit of measurement originates from ancient times when merchants discovered that the dried seeds of the carob tree had a relatively constant weight.

Diamonds with higher carats are much rarer in nature and therefore have a greater value.

Colour

The colour of a diamond is graded from D (highest value) to Z (lowest value). The most precious diamonds are colourless and this is why Salvadori uses extremely high quality diamonds ranging from D to G.

While the opposite is true for fantasy colour diamonds such as yellow diamonds. Their value increases with the strength and intensity of the colour.

Clarity Grade

The purity of a diamond is determined by various factors such as size, position and number of inclusions, as seen using 10x magnification.

Diamonds without any purity characteristics are considered pure, or internally pure, and as their characteristics increase, the degree of purity decreases.

Cut

The cut determines how well a diamond has been cut and should not be confused with the shape of the cut.

The aspects that contribute to the beauty and the return of light are: proportions, polish and symmetry which, in turn are classified as excellent, very good, good, faint.

The Salvadori diamonds are all excellent or very good.

The skills honed over time, the experience and love for these precious stones allows Salvadori Diamond Atelier to always choose the finest diamonds on the market.

Salvadori is a member of the Antwerp Diamond Exchange and all of its diamonds are covered by International Guarantees and Certificates such as the GIA (Gemmological Institute of America) and HRD (Hooge Raad voor Diamant of Antwerp). For more information send an email to [email protected].
