The precious history of the Diamond

Diamonds are believed to have first been used in India some 3000 years ago when significant alluvial deposits could be found. They arrived in the West following the expeditions of Alexander the Great.

The diamond has been credited with magical and beneficial powers. In China, for example, it was believed that it had the power of keeping illness away, other oriental cultures used it as a talisman against poisons and serious diseases.

Other populations, on the other hand, saw it as an enduring symbol of love. For this reason, it was carefully guarded by lovers and brides and is used today in engagement rings. As a result of these attributes, the diamond was often used in religious symbolism, which is why they have always been considered valuable and precious.

The name diamond comes from the Greek word “adamas”, unbreakable, because it was hard to attack and to work. Due to this hardness, it was used by Romans as an engraving tool. Today, diamonds are still used in various industrial sectors as a cutting and grinding tool, thanks to their hardness and strength.

But it is in jewellery where the diamond achieves its greatest beauty and value. The different attributes of the diamond, its sacredness and physical properties all come together in this application. This material is able to keep its shine for long periods of time, so it can be worn every day, showing good resistance to wear.
