There are many quotes and aphorisms about diamonds. Some are very well known and have become part of our culture. For this article, we selected three famous quotes on diamonds and we researched their origin.
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend!
This is perhaps the most famous quote about diamonds, especially since it was sung by Marilyn Monroe in the 1953 film “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.” The song has been very successful over the years and has had a big impact and influence on pop culture that endures to this day. In 1985 Madonna recreated the scene and dressed up like Marilyn in the music video “Material Girl”. Beyoncé instead did a remake of the song for Emporio Armani in 2007. In 2011, Christina Aguilera sang the song in the Golden Globe winning movie “Burlesque”.
A diamond is forever!
This slogan is more than 60 years old and was the saviour of the diamond industry. In fact, after the Great Depression, diamond sales declined, and women preferred something more practical than diamonds. In 1949 Mary Frances Gerety was assigned by the advertising agency for which she worked to create a slogan that encapsulated the security and eternal romance that comes from owning a diamond. Legend has it that she scribbled the slogan on a piece of paper late one night after coming home from a night out with a friend. The next day Gerety showed the slogan to her agency and it eventually became a powerful slogan which is still used today.
A diamond is a chunk of coal that did well under pressure.
To finish off, a quote that is equally famous and powerful which was uttered by Henry Kissinger, former US Secretary of State, during an interview in the 1960s. This powerful aphorism is able to convey all the charm of a diamond, as well as act as a great inspiration and give a message of hope!
